Later today city comptroller mark Schroeder is expected to announce that he is running for mayor of buffalo. Incumbent mayor Byron brown is already announced he is running. And then there are two other candidates that have said they are possibly looking at running. Among them Erie county legislator Betty Jean grant an African American Democrat who would also challenged brown. This would actually be all three of them four of them even perhaps Democrats in a September primary so far the Republicans have not announced that they're going to go ahead. And have a candidate on their side of the equation. And Terrence Robinson a former buffalo cop who's a member of the city preservation board has also said he's possibly eyeing a run. Amid this scenario where you have at least one in maybe two African American candidates challenging Byron brown. We have to look at history we have to look at mayor Jimmy Griffin. And how from a base in south buffalo he was able to take a fractured African American community. Add in some support from conservatives. And basically run up the middle to capture the mayor's race several times against a lot of odds that weren't necessarily in his favor. Conventional wisdom is that mayor Byron brown has good strong lock on things here. He's a reported in the buffalo new some internal polling that basically has it at a 7030 split in his favor. But what about that Conservative Party won about the possibility of support. From them in the middle let's talk to Erie county Conservative Party chairman Ralph Laurie go Ralph thanks for joining us. I'm good I'm glad you're here. I know there's not a lot you can say definitively until the process plays out. But a explained the endorsement process and be where you're leaning. Is it likely that mark Schroeder could have a conservative endorsement putting more credence to this theory that maybe he runs up the middle with that support. Well force evolve the process is we have an executive board that's comprised of 35 individuals. From Erie county cool web stat on that board most of them for many years. Some fairly neo and they're the ones who make the decision so. The executive board of the Erie county Conservative Party meets monthly. We discuss all types of political issues and what will be happening at this point in time it will be bringing in every candidate that they are endorsement. They'll cultural vetting process. And then probably sometime in early may will make the final decision of who gets the endorsement. What do you look at in terms of issues I know in the past you have supported mayor brown. Well I'm what we look at first of all conservative values and we look at the particular state. This speed is an executive's seat the mayor of the city of buffalo so the values here and to be more involved with economics. We at the conservative values and act like the situation being able to. Lower taxes in the city of buffalo provide economic growth to residents in the city of buffalo so it's more focus. In an executive position on the economics that white you know what displayed position. Arm which would be both economics and a great many social issues. In the past when the Conservative Party has endorsed. Mayor brown. Are any of those particular issues are ones that rose to the top fifteen point two. As being in place then and maybe not and I know this is a leading question my senior remarks elsewhere. And maybe not in place now has that been a shift or change that would make you at least less likely to lean with the mayor. Beginning first ball of the history of endorsing up Byron brown I've curriculum respect for Byron. But in terms of a history of endorsing and we get not endorsed him in every election we haven't horse and in elections all for the executive position of mayor. And in the first election. That Katz for mayor while we endorse them he ran against Kevin helper who. Had been registered conservative became a Republican. Army and who ran against and in that particular race actually help or won the conservative primary and ended with insert the line. And the second endorsement. All sort of layer while you maintain the conservative endorsement successful with the conservative endorsement. Even Guam so. In the third our election there was a challenge on the conservative line by Sergio Rodriguez. And mayor brown maintained a conservative endorsement and again more successful. What we liked about mayor brown what is city staff its annual economic. There are a number of things in those initial races. That led to believe that in terms of the economic concerns this street view was the best candidate. Now that things that. Play into this situations and then it's all Byron involvement in the fifteen dollar now reach. Quite bad words he was not a panel in New York City that recommended that the dollar an hour wage. Now become the state. Democratic chair. Championing the likes of Hillary Clinton and it Cuomo and so those are the issues at my people have to look. In terms mark Schroeder order as in each and every election that you run for public office that the conservatives those. So are shorter man who'll bat well right here in the private sector went to the public sector. And in each and every election as step back in the that your party who are very good reason. This sounds like a lot of the stuff that people like me like to talk about but I have put in practical terms how many conservatives either in the city of buffalo. Is this just fun stuff to talk about or do you see the party endorsement making a difference. Well let's ethnic can question that first ball. Clearly and I know you'll understand this state the party endorsement has made a difference in many many races here in Erie county. It's it's troll and the numbers bear out that the controller the Teixeira. Chris Jacobs when he was the clerk. The legislative majority. Democratic. Mark much more when he ran for Supreme Court all these people and many many more. One because people on the conservative bloc last year's election to all Republicans fall. Supreme Court candidates won solid as they're the ones. Alex also true that there are what is well under record conservatives in the city of buffalo. And the election cycle will show you that we are able to get wet well a ball. Number oh all right are conservative when we don't just do what percentage of our registered conservatives. We are often it doubled the number or more. I believe the conservative endorsements don't mean will be helpful. In the city off what was. So that 12100 number is no way an accurate reflection. When we look at the fact that you're giving him or whoever they him as an extra line on the ballot. And that's exactly correct. But not only an extra line on the ballot and the wind at the third position on this spell all the things up the branding mean great deal. I don't know if this this next questions when you can specifically comment on because. I'm I'm not about to stereotype and say. All all blacks are Democrats conservatives aren't accent or. But to what degree. Is it important that while we look at the power of your party in this race. We also look at whether or not there's going to be a fractured African American vote. Well first of all when you talk about conservatives. Looked at my beginnings for a while street in the city of buffalo I grew up in a mixed neighborhood. I the black community as a community be it should embrace conservative values. Our own so to me that's first and foremost. I think that you know it is sort of party will play a role in you know in this election. And what kind of timeframe is all this on just about what you said initially. If there is an endorsement it would be coming out roughly when. Probably early days. It slate is here is there's a great many candidates this year we will interview everybody seeks the conservative endorsement. Alms and in this particular situation I have talked to mark Schroeder a number of times. I have not stepped down yet we talked to Byron brown. He did give me a call recently I anticipate will be sitting down. It will be a decision that play out based on values based on what people view of the city is. When I look at what are a lot of positive things in terms of what he's incapable of doing what they can't see it taken. So this. Going to be that kind of decision process. And mark Schroeder makes his declaration later today so far Beijing grant and two must agree Terrence Robinson. I have not made the decision they have not talked about it as much are they involved in making any overtures to you was there any tea leaves we can read there. I'm Betty Jean grant has ever sought our endorsement for her legislative seat. Looked whoever's seeks our endorsement will be interviewed in that it by the party. It's about values but in this particular situation as I said it's about your delete believed to be an executive. It's about your ability to all consider how Bockwoldt works in terms of economic. Where we are in this scale and how to bring it up from these. Low numbers that we are all across the country and in in the number of economic issues. It's about their. All right Ralph interest in south thanks for sharing your opinions this morning. That's Erie county would Conservative Party chairman Ralph Florio.
